About La Sylphide
One of the oldest ballets still commonly performed, La Sylphide tells the story of a Scotsman named James, who wakes from a dream on the morning of his wedding to see a beautiful winged slyph. Elusive and playful, she professes her love for him. James’ obsessive pursuit of the otherworldly creature leads him to abandon his fiancée and follow the sylph into the dangerous realm of the forest sprites, where he realizes that in reaching for an unobtainable love, he has lost everything.
This ballet is famous for being the first to prominently feature dancing en pointe. In 1832, Marie Taglioni performed the role of the Sylph and became famous for shortening her skirts to show off her exceptional pointe work. It was considered highly scandalous at the time, but she changed ballet forever! Now audiences can appreciate the skill, strength, and beauty characteristic of ballerinas who dance en pointe.
We hope you’ll join us for this captivating production of La Sylphide on July 27 and 28, 2024!
